Kaila Murphy is not afraid. And in the public relations business, that's a big plus.
From her days growing up in Abilene to her successful sojourn at The University of Texas, she has been willing to step out and take chances and do whatever it takes for the people and ideas she believes in. Along the way, she has been not only a great student, an effective debater, a quick learner, and a solid leader -- but someone whose positive attitude and keen execution skills are serving her well in the publishing world.
She's also a fast finisher. During her high school years, she had big dreams of going to UT, and after she graduated with honors from Abilene High School, she set out for Austin like thousands of others. Unlike them, Kaila turned her four year plan into three and graduated with a degree in Public Relations. During her few college breaks, she traveled the world -- visiting China, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, Cambodia, England, Hungary and Poland, to name just a few.
Kaila completed three internships in public relations while working on her degree. And during her stint at Cave Henricks, it was obvious to all early on that she was a natural. "I worried a little that actually doing PR would be vastly different from what I learned in college," she says. "In fact, I've been able to use much of what I learned there. And this role has really honed my writing and communication skills as I present our authors and their ideas to the media every day."
"Succeeding in public relations has never been harder," says company president Barbara Henricks. "The economy is weak, the industry is in the midst of a seismic shift, and most people are afraid to pick up the phones and initiate relationships with the media. Kaila seems to thrive doing just that – diving in, communicating clearly, and earning respect with journalists faster than I would have ever hoped."
Her favorite moment so far in her role as publicist? "Nothing tops getting a big hit for one of our clients. Getting that yes, no matter how many no's preceded it, is the best part of my job."
Kaila's already done plenty of that. She has worked on successful titles like Jeanne Bliss' I Love You More Than My Dog, David Livermore's Leading With Cultural Intelligence and is currently working directly with Barbara on a new book by Tom Rath and Jim Harter, Wellbeing. Her positivity and warmth come through loud and clear to our authors and the media we work with every day. Not surprisingly, it is turning into great success for those we serve.
