IN PURSUIT OF ELEGANCE:Why the Best Ideas Have Something Missing
By Matthew E. May
Doubleday
May, 2009
The search for solutions is real and eternal. And as a soft economy meets a brutally competitive business environment, the need for streamlined solutions will never be more keenly felt. In his new book, IN PURSUIT OF ELEGANCE, former Toyota executive Matthew May digs deep into what he calls elegant solutions -- those that combine surprising power and uncommon simplicity -- that not only fix problems but also create value.
The book looks at breakthrough moments in a wide swath of fields, from science to art, business to sports, and determines the key components of elegant solutions -- symmetry, seduction, subtraction and sustainability. Together, these result in a way of a thinking that involves doing less, rather than more.
"This is keenly important now," writes May, "because the most pressing challenges facing society are in urgent need of sustainable solutions. Because we need some way to consistently replace value-destroying complexity with value-creating simplicity. Because we need to know how to make room for more of what matters by eliminating what doesn't."
Matthew E. May is the author of the critically acclaimed book, The Elegant Solution, which won the Shingo Prize for Excellence. A popular speaker, he lectures to corporations, governments, and universities around the world on ingenuity and innovation. He spent nearly a decade advising Toyota, and his articles have appeared in national publications such as USA Today, strategy + business, and Quality Progress. He has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, and on CNN and National Public Radio. A graduate of The Wharton School and of The Johns Hopkins University, he lives in Lake Sherwood, California.
