From The Real World to Shark Tank

shark tankOver the past few years, reality TV has seen a sizeable shift. Once dominated solely by shows meant to simultaneously induce laughter and horror, while the subjects of the show live off of nothing more than booze and Cheetos, the genre has expanded to an unlikely sector: business.

With programs like “Shark Tank,” “Undercover Boss” and AMC’s new series “The Pitch,” business reality TV is on a steady incline. Last Friday, “Undercover Boss” edged out “Shark Tank” by 1-tenth of a rating point for the most viewers aged 18-49 in the 8pm hour, drawing in 7 million viewers.

While shows like “Jersey Shore” and “Mob Wives” can hardly be described as substantive, business reality TV offers important lessons for entrepreneurs, business leaders and career-focused individuals. Here are some of my favorite reality TV takeaways:
