The Best Blogs in Publishing

Who in the publishing industry doesn’t love a good list?

Publicists build media lists, editors are always talking about their “list,” and of course everyone in the industry is on pins and needles each week hoping that their books hit THE list.

While each of the lists mentioned above demands plenty of attention, “best of” lists aren’t too far behind – from Oprah’s list of the 20 best summer reads for 2010 to The New Yorker’s “20 Under 40” list, which, notably, garnered a sizable amount of discussion on Twitter.

Such lists are subjective, frustrating and poorly-informed if your author doesn’t make the cut, while at the same time lauded as smart, insightful and right on the money if the right book makes the list. Not only do they give us something to quibble over at book parties, they provide great publicity for the books and authors listed.

As much as we would like to create our own list of the best fall business books, some might consider our picks a little biased. Instead, below you’ll find a list of a few of our favorite publishing blogs.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but these blogs keep us informed, make us laugh and provide a sounding board for discussion and creative ideas that will impact the future of our business.

Here are a few of our favorites:

MediaBistro’s GalleyCat – The first word on the book publishing industry.

SlushPile Hell – One grumpy literary agent, a sea of query fails, and other publishing nonsense.

Joe Wikert’s Publishing 2020 Blog – A book publisher’s future visions of print, online, video and all Media formats not yet invented.

Query Shark – How to write query letters … or, really, how to revise query letters so they actually work.

Critical Mass – The blog of the National Book Critics Circle Board of Directors.

The Portfolio Javelin – Business, business books, and the business of books.

Publishing Perspectives – International publishing news and opinion.

Booksquare – Dissecting the publishing industry with love and skepticism.

The Book Publicity Blog – News, tips, trends and miscellany for book publicists.

Follow The Reader – A blog for those who read and recommend books.
